What Goes Into Your Meal

One of my specialties - and joys - is food photography. For those who don't know me or my story, I do food photography in St. Louis regularly for Sauce Magazine and for my wife's inspiring (and often hilarious) cupcake blog. I've also written a little about food photography techniques and tips for Digital Photography School.

While food itself is a huge component of my work, I love capturing the personalities involved in the preparation and serving of the meals we eat, from farmers to bussers. These people work hard for many hours in brutal conditions trying to satisfy everybody. Their hard work goes into every sip we take and every bite that we savor. Food photography has made me appreciate this fact even more.

Below are some of my favorite photos of food and of the people working to make it end up on your plate.

Please send my compliments to the chef.

  1. Have you seen the food photos of Stephanie Klein? She's a photographer/author/blogger transplanted from New York City to Texas and her food images never fail to make my mouth water.

  2. I haven't, but I'll track her down. Thanks for the recommendation!

  3. Her blog is here and the categories Food and Drink and Food Porn have the most pictures of food in them, though not all the posts have food shots. Look for her older stuff, before she moved. She used to take a lot more food pictures.

  4. Sweet work. Love the tastiness of the coffee roaster. Mmmm, smell that roast. Did you know that when you hear the sound of toothpicks breaking in the roaster, that means the coffee beans are almost ready to pour out? Roaster Eric @ Northwest Coffee near SLU pointed that out.

  5. Erik, thanks for bringing up a great point that I totally neglected!

When I go on food shoots involving people, I get so much more out of the visit than if I were just shooting a plated entree:

    "What is that smell?"
"How did you get into smoking meats in your backyard?"
"What inspired you to get into coffee pours?"

Even though I'm not writing up the articles my photos appear in, I love learning all about the what and who that I'm photographing. It's inspiring.
